Difference between Sunblock and Sunscreen

Sunblock and Sunscreen

Sunblock and sunscreen both protect the skin from the sun, but they work in different ways. Sunblock physically blocks the sun’s rays and creates a barrier on the skin, while sunscreen absorbs the rays and filters them before they can penetrate the skin.

Sunblock is more effective for prolonged sun exposure and is recommended for people with sensitive skin, while sunscreen is easier to apply and is more suitable for daily use.

Generally, sunscreen is for protection against UVA rays, which cause skin damage and Sunblock is formulated to protect against UVB rays, that cause sunburn. But many sunscreens and sunblocks tick both boxes, helping to prevent wrinkles and sunburn.

What are the UVA and UVB and UVC rays?

UVA, UVB, and UVC are both types of ultraviolet rays that can damage the skin. UVA and UVB are responsible for sunburn and can also cause skin cancer, they both are able to reach deeper into the skin because of their wavelength.

It’s able to actually reach DNA and the Nucleus of our skin cells and actually damaged them that which really cousin further aging, and premature wrinkling formation this is also can ultimately cause skin cancer because it is able to attack the deep layer of our skin.

Free radical damage also occurs in our surroundings like pollution and other things we just can’t physically see but it cousin premature aging.

UVA and UVB rays

1. UVA rays

Ultraviolet A has a long energy wavelength. It penetrates more deeply into the skin and attacks DNA cells of the dermis that cause aging, and the skin looks saggy. UVA has a more long-term damaging effect on the skin.

2. UVB rays

Ultraviolet has a short energy wavelength that hits upon the skin’s surface Epidermis. When Dermis is irritating that causes redness, swelling, and sunburn, and further, it turns into age spots, wrinkling, and pigmentation.

3. UVC rays

are not seen really because it typically gets filtered out by the Ozone layer. All types of rays are present all year round, even on cloudy days, and can reflect off surfaces like water and snow.

SPF ( sun protection factor )

sun protection factor

SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor and measures the level of protection against UVB rays. The higher the SPF, the more protection the product provides. For example, an SPF 30 sunscreen will block around 97% of UVB rays, while an SPF 50 sunscreen will block around 98%. However, it’s important to note that SPF only measures protection against UVB rays, not UVA rays.
Having a range of numbers like SPF 20 30 40 50 and above.
Some SPF-related questions are……….

Q. Is a bigger number better or more protected?
According to the research, there is not much difference between 30 and 50. SPF 50 protected 98% and SPF 20 is 95% filters UVB.

Q. How long can we stay with SPF?
Protection time without sunscreen 10min x SPF number 30 = Maximum sun exposure time is 300
Also depending on climate weather, wind, water, and washed-off, you should be reapplying.

Q. How much sunscreen need to apply?
1.23 grams or ¼ tsp for the face and neck and a shot glass for the body.
Sun protection factor on your foundation or powder is not enough to protect, because
¼ tsp means 11 pumps of foundation that are hard to apply to cover the face like cream on a cake, it clogs your pores so rely only on SPF makeup for protection.

Types and ingredients of Sun Protection

There are many types of sun protection products available, including lotions, sprays, gels, and sticks. There are also tinted moisturizers and makeup with SPF. Some products are waterproof, sweat-proof, or designed for specific activities like sports or outdoor events. It’s essential to choose the right product for your skin type and needs.
Mostly 2 types are common,

Chemical Sun protection

They work by actually absorbing UV rays in the skin and chemicals change this into heat and released it as infrared rays, the chemical may irritate the skin, if sensitive.
It contains chemicals like,

  • Avobenzone
  • Octocrylene
  • Octinoxate
  • Oxybenzone
  • Mexoryl SX
  • Tinosorb S and M
  • PABA and trolamine salicylate PABA
  • Homosalate

chemical sun protection having lightweight consistency.

Works better under Makeup.

Physical Sun protection

  • Zinc oxide
  • Titanium dioxide

and that’s the reason for white cast on the skin, although these ingredients meet the FDA’s requirements to be labeled as safe and effective.
It contains active minerals that reflect UV rays.

Sun protection products contain different ingredients, including physical blockers like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, and chemical filters like avobenzone and oxybenzone.

Some products also contain antioxidants, vitamins, and plant extracts. It’s important to read the label and avoid products with harmful ingredients like parabens, fragrances, and artificial colors.

Choosing the Right Sun protection

right Sun Protection

When choosing a sun protection product, consider your skin type, the level of activity you’ll be doing in the sun, and the amount of sun exposure you’ll get. there are several factors to consider:

  • Sun Protection Factor (SPF): SPF is a measure of how well a sunblock protects against UVB radiation. The higher the SPF, the more protection the sunblock provides.
  • Broad-spectrum: Look for a sunblock that provides broad-spectrum protection, which means it protects against both UVA and UVB radiation.
  • Water-resistant: If you plan to spend time in the water or sweat heavily, choose a water-resistant sunblock.

Choosing the right sun protection can be a daunting task, but these few key things you keep in mind. If you have sensitive skin, look for products that are labeled as hypoallergenic or fragrance-free.

The Skin Type and Time to Take to Burn

Different skin types have different reactions to the sun, and it’s important to understand what your skin needs. Fair skin will burn more quickly than dark skin, which contains more melanin and is better at protecting itself from the sun’s rays.

The amount of time it takes for your skin to burn also depends on factors like the time of day, the altitude, and the cloud cover.

Sunblock is a good choice for people with sensitive skin or for those who burn easily. Sunscreen is suitable for people who have a darker skin tone or who don’t burn as easily. No matter what your skin type is, you should always use sun protection when you’re going to be out in the sun for an extended period of time.

According to the FITZPATRICK scale

Light pale white skin always burns never tanning.

White, fair skin usually burns and is hard to tanning.

Medium, white to olive skin will be mild burn and tan to olive.

Type 1,2 and 3 skin usually takes 5 to 10 min to burn.

Olive moderate brown skin rarely burns but easily tans.

Type 4 takes 15 min to burn.

Brown, dark brown skin is very hard to burn but tans easily.

Brown, very dark brown to black skin it never burns because it is deeply pigmented.

Type 5 and 6 skin types take 20 min or are hard to burn means more pigment in your skin the longer you can go out.

How to Apply

To get the best protection, it’s essential to apply it correctly:

Apply sun protection 15-30 minutes before going outside.

Use enough to cover all exposed skin, including ears, nose, and lips.

Reapply it every two hours, or more frequently if swimming or sweating heavily.

Use sunblock even on cloudy or overcast days, as UV radiation can still penetrate clouds.

Apply your skincare products first like,

1. Cleanser 2. toner 3. serum 4. eye cream 5. moisturizer 6. Sunscreen dries it for 2 to 3 mint, then apply 7. primer dry it 8. foundation blends it 9. concealer 10. powder.

Important Label Information

When you’re choosing sun protection, be sure to read the label carefully. Look for information about the product’s SPF, the ingredients, and whether it offers broad-spectrum protection against UVA and UVB rays.
You can see on the packaging 3 terms…..

1. SPF:

Determines the protection from UVA, UVB, and UVC rays and how much it can protect your skin before it starts burning, these are all discussed above.

2. PA+++:

Is a grading system starting in Japan and it’s intended to inform consumers about how much UVA rays can protect your skin the plus means the range of protection from ultra violate rays typically higher is the better.

PA+ is not FDA and EV-approved that’s why is not seen in European and American-formulated sunscreens but will be Korean, Japanese, and Asian brands.

3. Broad spectrum:

This means protecting both UVA and UVB, physical and mineral both are the same type.

Any Side Effects of Sun protection
